O.K., it is whatever season of fish that we happen to catch that day. I guess that is the really great thing about fishing in Key West, Florida… there just isn’t a season for anything in particular
We more likely have “trends” for fishing, instead of seasons like other places. First, you have to remember that when the temp dips below sixty degrees we get out our “long sleeve shorts” to keep us from freezing! That is, jeans to those of you in the real world ![]()
Fish just don’t respond to the ten degrees of temp fluctuation. We have a mellower median temperature rate than Hawaii. Hard to pin down a “season” when things change in a dozen hours. Three days ago, Dolphin off=shore. Yesterday, Tunas in 200 feet, and today, a 34 pound Wahoo right up on the bar.
Nick and Bryan, from the Chicago-Naples area (?) spent a quick weekend fishing with us and managed to capture numerous Dolphin, Wahoo, Makeral, Grouper, and Mutton Snapper while the other boats died a slow death of boredom and complaining. We always look on the bright side… We are out fishing and that’s what our clients want us to do. No one wants to be on vacation where the Captain or mate of your charterboat spends your time complaining about their personal finances
It is entertaiment; so entertain!
The midwesterners ended up with a couple of great fresh catch dinners at our local seafood restaurants and took home a pile of fillets on thier flight. Good times and they say, “we will be back.” Music to our ears!
Wahooo Season!

Nice fish guys! Coming from the north east, 60F and good fishing sounds pretty good right about now. I enjoy our seasons, but any way you slice it, winter is always too long.
What did you catch the Wahoo on?
Trolling in 200 feet at the “End of the Bar” 20 miles west of Key West. Deep troll down 50 feet with a ballyhoo, pink seawhitch, on #9 wire. The secret to better hook and land ratios on Wahoo is to accelerate when the fish first strikes. The natural tendancy is to drop the RPM’s at first, go against the urge and speed up! You will land more.
